TERMONIA, Piet

Licentiaat Fysica, Doctor in de Wetenschappen, Hoofd Wetenschappelijke Dienst Meteorologisch en Klimatologisch Onderzoek van het Koninklijk Meteorologisch Instituut, professor aan de UGent, vakgroep Fysica en Sterrenkunde.

Piet Termonia earned his PhD in 1997 in theoretical physics at KULeuven. After a two-year postdoc at the university of Turin, Italy, he started to work at the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium on the topic of numerical modeling for weather and climate. Since 2010 he is the Head of the Scientific Service Meteorological and Climatological Research. He is a professor at Ghent university since 2004 in the department of Physics and Astronomy where he was one of the creators of the postgraduate program on Weather and Climate Modeling and is a co-founder of the Atmospheric Physics Unit. He led the largest European Numerical Weather Prediction consortium ALADIN for ten years. He is one of the founders of the new ACCORD NWP consortium. He led the Belgian CORDEX.be project that established the current high-resolution climate scenarios for Belgium.

He is active with his team on the following research topics: atmospheric modeling, weather prediction, climate change, climate impacts and the development of climate services.
